The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, says Nigerians have accepted Democracy as the best form of government that guarantees the desired Socio-economic development of the nation.

He stated this at a lecture in commemoration of the June 12 Democracy Day with the theme Nigeria’s Democratic Experience: Reflections on Leadership Recruitment and Democratic Institution Building.

The June 12 Commemorative lecture was organized by the National Institute of Legislative and Democratic Studies as part of activities to mark this year’s Democracy day to promote and consolidate democratic governance in line with the mandate of the institute.

Gbajabiamila, while stressing the need for democratic institutions to maintain high standards of democratic values said the innovations in the new electoral act would improve the electoral and democratic system of the country.

On his part, the former Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu said to improve the nation’s democratic system, the leadership recruitment process must be democratic.

The Director-General of the National Institute of Legislative and Democratic Studies, Professor Abubakar O Sulaiman, while highlighting some progress made since the return of Democracy in 1999, described the recent monetization and commercialization of nomination and expression of interest forms as a threat to the nation’s democratic rule.

Prof. Sulaiman said the Institute would continue to promote and strengthen democratic institutions in Nigeria.
